A PRESENTATION ON SUICIDE AND DEPRESSION (Part 2)
(click here for part 1: Essay on depression and suicide)

Question: "I have been contemplating leaving this body and starting fresh in a new existence or lifetime. According to the Teachings of Abraham by Ester Hicks, she says that if one cannot attain their natural state of joy and they decide to take their own life to return to their natural state of joy, then that is totally fine. She says there is no judgment and there are no punishments. This seems contradictory to what you say. You make it sound like there is a containment cell where I will be forced to see what my life could have been. Deciding to move on is a huge decision. Could you clarify a little further on what happens to a soul after taking one's own life? I just want a new body. My body is worthless and I want to start over with a fresh one. I don't mind starting over, I just want to choose a different set of circumstances. I can't imagine why I chose the situation I am in. Will I be fully conscious of the way things are when I cross over enough that I will remember not to choose certain conditions next time around? Will I be rushed into reincarnation? If you can answer these question you are seriously helping me with some major spiritual stuff here that has been aching to be answered all my life."

Psychic Advice:
You are certainly not alone. Many, many people face these questions and choices. Life on Earth is not easy, and can often feel overwhelming. We are presented with challenges, responsibilities and choices on a daily basis, and at times, it can be very difficult to cope with it all. As humans, we must also live with our body, with our own thoughts and feelings, and deal with the energies of others. Sometimes, it can feel like we just want to get off this rollercoaster ride, but death is not a solution, because life simply continues without end.

I cannot speak directly to the teachings of Abraham/Ester Hicks - although I have found their teachings to be excellent for the most part, you must interpret those for yourself. I can only express what has been shown to me. Death is a part of life; everything on Earth is born and dies over and over again, like the cycles of the seasons. Death is a process of purifying and refining the soul.

First, we must understand that our soul fragments itself to have different experiences in different dimensions simultaneously, just as our Source fragments Itself to experience existence through all of us. The fragments of our soul become the spirit that inhabits the body in each of our incarnations, and when we die, our spirit returns to become one with our soul again, just as our soul will eventually return to become one with our Source, once our soul has fully evolved through our incarnational experiences.

Our soul's purpose and desire is to experience all things, and to grow and evolve through these experiences. The soul, or Higher Self, makes choices based on what will allow for the greatest growth and evolution, not necessarily based on what will be fun or feel good. Therefore, the soul sets an agenda and purpose for each incarnation that does not really take into account what the experience will actually feel like as a human being.

The goal of the soul is simply to grow and evolve as much as possible, and we often undergo the greatest amount of growth through our most painful and challenging experiences. That is not to say that we cannot experience joy, for indeed, the ultimate growth and evolution comes from accepting what is, letting go of our resistance and the suffering that it causes, and thereby transcending our pain to live in a state of peace, love and joy, which are the highest frequencies.

Once we consciously recognize that we have Free Will and the power of choice, then we can choose how we respond to our experiences, which determines the ultimate outcome of those experiences. From that point, you have the power to direct the experiences of your life, because you are resonating on higher and higher frequencies, and thereby drawing to you experiences that are on higher and higher levels, such as joy, love, prosperity, wellbeing, etc.

Depression is literally a hole that you fall into, and it is difficult to get out of because the thoughts that create it continue to compound the problem, taking one deeper and deeper into darkness and despair. These low frequencies attract more experiences of a low vibration, which only bring one further down. Even the language used to describe feelings of depression address these low frequencies: "I feel really low/down", which simply becomes an affirmation that holds one in negative energy. The more we fight or resist it, the more painful it becomes, because negative thoughts and feelings simply increase and attract more negativity. One can become so tied up in these thoughts and feelings that suicide feels like the only way out, but it is not.

You do not transcend lower frequencies simply by shedding your skin. In order to raise your frequency and attract experiences that are on a higher frequency in subsequent lifetimes, you must be willing to raise your frequency here and now. That is the purpose of this lifetime. (There is a fabulous book by Dr. Brian Weiss called "Same Soul, Many Bodies" that demonstrates how the choices we make in this lifetime influence our choices, opportunities and experiences in "future" lifetimes.)

The key is to understand that we have the power of choice. Our spirit/ego/mind makes our day-to-day choices of how we live our life, what we put into it, what we get out of it, and how we choose to respond and react to our experiences. In each moment, we have choice that affects our ultimate experience, and in each moment, we can choose to change our experience. The desire for death is the desire for the ultimate change, but it is better to use your Free Will to choose the change and transformation that you truly wish to experience in your life, rather than assuming that death will automatically do that for you. Death is change, but not necessarily for the better.

Suicide is truly a game of Russian Roulette, because you cannot be guaranteed that your next incarnation will be somehow better than this one. In this lifetime, you have enough conscious awareness to even be asking these questions, and you have enough resources and mental capabilities to be doing so by computer. On this Earth, many people are experiencing lifetimes of starvation, of utter suffering and poverty, of war, terror and devastation. This is not to minimize the suffering that you feel, but it is to say that you have already achieved a state that is better than many. You have choice in this lifetime, and you have the power to change your life, including choosing your death.

The Serenity Prayer can be a most helpful affirmation: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference." You have power to make great changes in your life, and to create peace and joy within you, but you must choose that.

Death is an ending and a new beginning that we will all face as part of life. When a person dies, no matter what the cause, their spirit is greeted and welcomed into a higher dimension of light (some spirits may fear and reject this transition because they were not ready to go, which is why some spirits get stuck here as "ghosts"). We will each create this scenario of crossing over according to our own beliefs, and the manifestation that we experience is designed to be one that makes us feel peaceful and at ease with the transition. For many, this is indeed a relief, and a release from the burden and density of human form.

What follows is a period of healing and adjustment. Death is a birth into a new dimension, and death, like birth, can be traumatic and painful. The soul undergoes a period of healing that is unique for everyone. Once the soul has regained strength and perspective, it begins a process of life review to determine what was learned from the previous life experiences. This involves feeling everything that you have felt, and feeling everything that you have caused others to feel. From this point, subsequent incarnations will be decided upon, including when, where, with whom, and for what purpose. You are not forced to reincarnate - you choose to do so, and you choose the circumstances, but there are certain criteria for making those choices.

In death, as in life, if you have not learned your lesson from a particular experience, then you will simply repeat the pattern until you do. If certain goals or agendas were not met in the previous lifetime, then those circumstances will be recreated to provide the opportunity once again. Also, if certain karmic bonds or "debts" were created, then those too, must be taken into account and life plans determined accordingly. Earth is a school that teaches us things that cannot be learned or experienced in other dimensions. It is not a punishment to be transcended, but an experience and a privilege that many souls are seeking to have, which is why the population here is so high.

There are reasons that you have chosen your body and your life situation. These circumstances were carefully chosen by your soul/Higher Self because they serve a purpose for your growth and evolution. You may have karma and unfinished business from other lifetimes that have necessitated your physical and emotional experiences so you can heal these issues and thereby restore peace and balance. Also, your life purpose is often more about what you have come here to give to others rather than what you have come to receive from them. If, for instance, you found that you came into an unloving family, it is often because your purpose and goal is to teach them how to love by giving it to them unconditionally, regardless of whether they are willing to receive it, or to give it back to you.

In the case where a lifetime was cut short, as with suicide, the period of time spent for life review may be prolonged to include the time of life that was not fully lived. This part of the review is not a judgment or punishment, but simply a way to examine one's choices and the effects that those choices have on others, indeed, on the entire Universe, because the choices we make ripple through eternity. What we choose to do or not do, to give or not give, affects everyone and everything. Even your presence itself, or void thereof, affects everyone and everything. Whether you choose to embrace it or not, there is a purpose for you being here at this time. Therefore, it is best to make choices that are as wise and empowered as possible.

When we die, we are not judged, punished or condemned, but we reap what we sow, for the Law of Karma is also the law of cause and effect. What we put out into the Universe comes back to us. Therefore, the choices that we make in each moment not only determine the choices and possibilities available to us in the next moment, but also affect the choices available to us in the next lifetime. Choose well and choose wisely, because the power of choice is yours, throughout this lifetime and others.
